Ray: The largest-scale event DC has done in years, DC KO is essentially turning out to be DC’s version of the Hunger Games – but with a cosmic twist. The heroes are entering a tournament at the heart of Apokalips, seeking to gain the power to become the King Omega – the one being who could counter Darkseid. The mysterious overseer puts them through cruel tests where you win or die – which was dangerous enough before a group of villains crashed the party. Already, many lives have been claimed including Batman’s, but the heroes soldier on, now down to 32 competitors – but they’re about to be cut in half. The architect has scattered 16 enchanted items through the arena, and only those holding one of them will move on to the one-on-one match. As soon as this is announced, the villains immediately start playing to kill – and after some hesitation, so do most of the heroes.

Game night. Via DC Comics.

The fact that this ultimately won’t have stakes of life and death is well-known – the deaths that have happened already are likely not going to stick – and that actually makes it more enjoyable. We’re seeing things in this issue that are pretty much impossible to show anywhere else, like Joker getting ahold of Atom’s size-changing belt and using it to deal out some impressive carnage. But amid the almost cartoonish violence, there is some really compelling dialogue and character moments, both in the interlude as the Trinity discusses what they would be if they didn’t have superpowers – and in a brilliantly tense showdown between Superman and Lex Luthor, as Lex reveals what his little phantom zone vacation has taught him and Superman reaches a level of determination that he’s rarely forced to dig into. It’s a big, brutal thrill ride of an issue, and that’s exactly what I want out of an event comic.
