Batman/Green Arrow/The Question: Arcadia #1 – Gabriel Hardman, Writer/Artist; Romulo Fajardo Jr, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: Black Label has become quite the spotlight for writer-artists, so it’s not an surprise that Gabriel Hardman, an acclaimed sci-fi author and frequent collaborator with Corrina Bechko, would make his way over here eventually. This noir thriller, teaming the DCU’s three most iconic non-powered vigilantes, takes place in something resembling the current day but feels very inspired by the work of Mike Grell and Denny O’Neill from the 1970s and 1980s. The three of them each wind up being pulled into their own sector of the mystery, with Vic Sage following some strange transactions at an airport and getting caught in the middle of a mysterious terror attack where the culprit is killed. Batman, meanwhile, intercepts two young activists staging a climate protest and chooses to let them go, much to Alfred’s confusion. And that leads him to look a little deeper into a climate summit being held by Queen Industries.

But Queen Industries isn’t being run by Oliver Queen, in the book’s main divergence from continuity (besides Alfred being alive). Ollie lost control of it long ago, and it’s run by a shady corporate titan who is more than happy to have Bruce dipping his toe into a scheme to create a climate-proof floating city. While Ollie schemes to get info on his former company, Bruce takes the front door and becomes a supposed ally of our likely villain – giving Batman access to the compound. Vic, meanwhile, digs into a lead in Azerbaijan thanks to some clues given by his friend Tot, and winds up in deeper than he expected. This first issue doesn’t give us too many answers, instead raising a ton of questions, but for those looking for a new old-school noir obsession, this is the perfect fit. This book doesn’t feel like a superhero title, it feels like a slow-burn detective noir that’s just getting started.
