Ray: DC KO is such a huge-scale book that many of the stories that should fit into the main book have to be detailed to the tie-ins – and fortunately, the tie-ins are all pretty great. This book by co-architect Josh Williamson has two main stories, the first being the unlikely team-up between Lois Lane and the recently reformed Superboy-Prime. Prime barely managed to escape Darkseid’s Legion with his life, but they’ve followed him, and are aiming to burn Lois and the Fortress to a crisp. Lois and Prime’s interactions are hilarious – she’s a mother now, obviously, has been for a while, and she doesn’t really seem to have any fear of the rogue Superboy anymore. In fact, she seems more able to keep him in line than most superheroes would, as he fantasizes about the carnage he could vause in the death tournament. This turnaround for the character has been a lot of fun.

The main story, though, is dedicated to Superman and Luthor, as they face off in Skartaris. Luthor has gained the upper hand, but there’s just one question remaining – how the hell did he pull it off? He seemingly escaped the Phantom Zone and beat the heroes to the nexus, ready to wage war for the power. And so we flash back to Luthor’s magnificent plan, which was carried out with the help of Gorilla Grodd’s psychic ability. This plan is like something out of a classic spy movie, with the various fake-outs involved. But just because Luthor has a team together, doesn’t mean this scheme will work out – especially since the Joker is involved. The chaotic clown wants in, but he’s not exactly a team player. And as Luthor makes his move against Superman in the nexus, the next to matches are set. This book feels like an essential companion piece to the main event, which is exactly what a tie-in should be.
