Review – Superman Unlimited #7: Jon Kent Investigations

Superman Unlimited cover, via DC Comics.

Superman Unlimited – Dan Slott/Jeremy Adams, Writers; Lucas Meyer, Artist; Marcelo Maiolo, Colorist

Ray – 9.5/10

Ray: It was a frequent occurrence over at Marvel that Dan Slott would have another writer pinch-hit for him between arcs, doing the scripting on done-in-one issues before his next arc began. The good news is, we definitely don’t get a trade-down this issue in the form of Jeremy Adams, who has been one of DC’s most enjoyable writers for a while on the Flash and Green Lantern franchises. Before the next big arc, we’re getting a Jon Kent spotlight, maybe leading into Adams’ upcoming DC KO tie-in. Jon has recently broken up with Jay (who broke bad in the end of Secret Six) and has been spending all his time as a superhero, doing test projects for John Henry and Lana over at Steelworks so he doesn’t have to figure out the other half of his life. Fortunately for him, his mother’s got that covered. When he visits Smallville, he gets a message from Lois. She’s opening a Daily Planet branch in Smallville – and wants him to head it up.

Jon has never been interested in reporting before, so this is an odd fit – and he knows it. But the Kents from two generations seem to be conspiring to challenge Jon to see what he can do in his civilian guise, and he embraces it. There’s a mystery around Smallville involving a “ghost cow” and several other disappearances, that Jon starts digging into it – with some hilarious bits involving how his simple disguise of glasses does actually work, much to his puzzlement. He even potentially gets a new romantic interest here – but only for Superman, not Jon. In the end, he discovers the source of the latest weirdness and uncovers something truly strange under Smallville in the best Silver Age fashion. This story definitely has a smaller scale than the previous arcs, but that’s what makes it work. Again, who do we have to bribe to just give Adams all the 13-21 characters in the DCU for a new team book?
