Review – Titans #29: Escape to Gemworld

Titans cover, via DC Comics.

Titans – John Layman, Writer; Pete Woods, Artist

Ray – 9/10

Ray: While the main plot of DC KO has the a-list heroes fighting in a cosmic tournament, everyone else is dedicated to preparing for the worst – a possible total evacuation of Earth if Darkseid wins. The Titans are taking point on this, with the herculean task of evacuating a planet of billions. They won’t need one destination – they’ll need several, and they’ve called in help from around the universe and beyond. Beast Boy and Beast Girl have taken a large group to what seemed to be an abandoned planet – only to find it teeming with alien life. Starfire is leading an evacuation into space, only to come under attack from the Female Furies. Fortunately, the GLC and an unlikely ally provide some backup. And then there’s Raven and Nightwing, who are leading the largest group to Gemworld, where Amethyst has provided room for countless Earthlings. But not everything is as it seems in the glittering kingdom.

Last chance. Via DC Comics.

First, a little girl seeks help from Raven to find her missing parents. Then some strange things start happening around the kingdom. It all turns out to be part of the plan of an iconic Titans villain, making her return in a new realm that she can twist to her will. But through the issue, Raven has mentioned an unpredictable “plus one” that she’s brought with her, and the reveal of who this is sets up the next chapter in an ongoing TT plotline that has been building for decades. This title really seems to have taken a big level up with this DC KO tie-in, giving the Titans a huge-scale plot that shows them coming into their own as heroes and finally taking charge of the DCU like they started doing during Dark Crisis. The diversity in settings really gets across the massive scale of this disaster, as well, with great moments for just about every member of the current team.
