Ray: Compared to the scale of the other titles in the line, Absolute Flash almost seems quaint at times. It’s primarily a teen adventure story as Wally West struggles to gain control of his new powers while being hunted by his own father. But behind the scenes, the characterization and suspense is some of the best in the entire line. As we last left off, before a break issue that delved into the twisted story of Barry Allen and the power he unleashed, Wally had been cornered by the Rogues, who had been deputized by Thawne and Rudy West to track him down. But they don’t want to capture him – they want to recruit him. Leonard Snart and his sister were both abandoned by Thawne after their experience in war, and both are out for revenge. Digger is loyal to Snart, but Trickster might have some surprises up her sleeve – as no one knows exactly what that mask has done to her.

Enter the Speed Force. Via DC Comics.

The back half of this issue dials up the tension a lot, as the Rogues deliver Wally to the base – only for him to experience a sudden speed force effect, essentially splitting himself off into countless counterparts of himself. It’s a really great effect that shows exactly how much the Speed Force can affect a normal person who has just received it. The Rogues are planning a betrayal – but Thawne, who has arrested Rudy, has her own up her sleeve, and it leads to one of the best action scenes of the run so far. So far, this title has been building and building with each issue, and it’s added layers to some characters who are typically generic villains. Grodd, the little psychic monkey, continues to be a huge scene-stealer and fan favorite in what’s been a pretty dark line so far. But overall, it’s the slow-burn scale building and the excellent character work that really makes this book excel.
