Ray – 9/10

Ray: Last issue saw Batman, Superman, and Robin stranded on the most confusing place in the universe – Bizarro World, where everything is upside down. But this issue had a big twist – the Bizarros were even more out of control than usual, as they were terrified of some sort of mysterious plague that was sweeping the planet. And the true nature of that plague was revealed in the cliffhanger as it became clear that Bizarro and Batzarro had become…smart. Both had been infected by the plague, removing the Bizarro programming from their mind, and making them ideal allies for the trio as they try to escape. In fact, things are going so well in the team-up that Robin starts to wonder if it would be best if the plague was just allowed to infect everyone – a highly offensive prospect to the Bizarros. But there’s no time for sensitivity training – because Brainzarro is attacking.

Odd world. Via DC Comics.

I always like seeing the different ways villains operate on Bizarro World, with some like Brainzarro being even more dangerous – he has an enlarging ray that magnifies cities, causing untold destruction. Bizarro Luthor, meanwhile, is the friendliest guy around and wants everyone to know Superman is his “Worst Friend”. While Superman deals with the pressing threat, Batman and Robin get some key information from Luthor that points to the source of the virus – and it ties back to an explorer who discovered something even more disturbing about Bizarro World that continues to be a threat. While the Bizarros may be convinced that nothing is more dangerous than their minds being broken, there’s a ticking clock over their entire world – and it’s only speeding up. Waid has always been great at taking old-school concepts and finding a way to raise the stakes sky-high, and this issue is full of great visuals and intense action.
