Review – Nightwing #129: Chicken Soup for the Interdimensional Soul

Nightwing – Dan Watters, Writer; Dexter Soy, Artist; Veronica Gandini, Colorist

Ray – 9/10

Ray: This has been the most surreal arc of Dan Watters’ Nightwing yet, as Titans Tower itself was transformed into a bizarre mutant hellscape covered in alien goo – with Oracle trapped inside. Armed with a device from Spheric Tech that can cut through the cosmic energy, Dick entered the mysterious landscape – only to discover that it’s his strange alien friend Nite-Mite behind it. The fifth-dimensional imp has been transformed against his will into something even more bizarre, and it’s creating all sorts of enemies for Nightwing to face. One of them was Van-Zee, the original Nightwing, who at first seemed eager to help – but when he figured out the Nightwing was trying to reset the playing field and likely wipe him out of existence in the process, he turned on Dick and tried to ensure that he was the only Nightwing left. Add in a mutated alien Haley, and things aren’t looking good for Nightwing.

This issue does a great job of combining some bizarre plot elements with a human core. In the end, Nite-Mite is sick and everything spins out of that, and Dick flashes back to his childhood with Bruce and Alfred, and how Alfred took over when Dick was sick and knew exactly what he needed for health and comfort. That gives him a plan that he and Oracle figure out from different corners of the compound – but there’s one more big twist in this issue that took me by surprise, and it’s about exactly who’s puppeting Van-Zee, who seems to be acting more directly and maliciously than the rest of Nite-Mite’s accidental creations. This is a subplot that’s been building for a while, and it’s also impressive how while Dan Watters’ run is extremely different in tone from Tom Taylor’s, it’s also expanding on many of the same themes. Looking forward to more direct Spheric Tech related plots as well, after the big reveal of the annual.
