Ray: Last issue took this series in an unexpected direction, as the reign of Grimaldi came to a close – and Two-Face and Clayface took control, eliminating his threat and taking over the empire he’s building. And now they’re ready to make their move on Gotham – kidnapping one powerful Gotham figure after another, as Clayface can just replace them. And having refined the Monster Men formula, they start transforming Grimaldi’s men into shape-shifters. Sensing something is up with Grimaldi, Batman and Robin answer the call from Jim Gordon to meet atop GCPD headquarters, but they quickly discover something is off. For one thing, Gordon’s hand seems to be melting on the light. Sure enough, Clayface has now seized control of the GCPD, and they have one order – capture Batman and Robin, dead or alive. And so kicks off the tenses action segment of the entire series.

Chris Samnee is clearly one of the best artists in the business, and that’s never clearer than when he’s drawing Gotham. The whip-fast action segment is only enhanced by just how much of Gotham we see during it, as Batman and Robin try to think on their feet as they come under constant attack and take one hit after another. They’re just starting to realize how much of the city has been captured – and it’s only getting worse. Because as the issue ends, the city strikes against Bruce and Dick where they live, and sets the series on a tense new path for its final act. Waid and Samnee have done an excellent job of tying in realistic elements into Bruce’s adoption of Dick, and the idea of just how dangerous a bad actor can be when in control of the wheels of power is all too relevant. This is one of the best issues in a while, as the stakes get raised even higher for the last act.
