Ray: This series continues to be one of the most inventive DC is putting out right now, with a cosmos-and-eons-spanning take on the New Gods that covers the eras far beyond this one. The villains are getting ready to move on Earth, and a Green Lantern seeks to alert the heroes of the planet of what’s coming. He’s nearly caught – but gets an unexpected assist from Forager, who is leading his bug army against the resurgence of Apokalips’ forces. After all, the bugs suffered as much as anyone across Darkseid’s reign, and they’re not letting that happen again. But back on Earth, as soon as the heroes get the alert, they prepare their secret weapon – Karim, the child rescued from Orion in India before the truce was carved out. Karim trusts his savior Scott Free, but he’s also deeply traumatized and wants to be assured he won’t have to fight. And that makes him deeply vulnerable to manipulation.

Of course, while the heroes don’t know this, the forces of Apokalips are on Earth as well – and they’ve formed a pact with Maxwell Lord, who has been corrupted by Apokalips and is more than willing to sell out his own planet. And they have a mole within the New Gods – the trickster Serifan. As the New Gods ask Orion to take up Highfather’s mantle, the son of Apokalips and New Genesis decides instead to carve his own path and become a different kind of leader for the lost civilization. But as Serifan makes his move, the stakes are raised again. While regular artist Evan Cagle is only on a few pages at the beginning, that actually works because the setting here is so different on Earth. We now know this series is wrapping up with 12 issues, and there’s so much ambition here that it’s hard to imagine this wrapping up in only three more issues, but I can’t wait for the last act.
