Ray – 9/10
Ray: After the previous Luthor/Joker team-up ended in disaster (although not quite as disastrous as Supergirl and Robin’s first date), the two villains likely hoped to never see each other again. But instead, they’re getting another team-up, and one far more chaotic than the last. While Superman and Batman are trying to enjoy a night off and watch the game, Luthor attempts to steal a rare artifact – only for it to have a very rare side effect, turning him intangible. This turns out to be part of Joker’s plan, forcing Luthor into a partnership in order to rob an alien artifact. The two bicker all the way, but Luthor eventually agrees to an alliance to get back to normal. And that’s when Joker reveals where the artifact is from – Thanagar. And that means it’s in a museum guarded by the most dangerous curator in the world, Carter Hall – aka Hawkman, who doesn’t take kindly to intruders.

Luthor is back to being tangible again, but that doesn’t help him much – it just makes him an easier target for Carter, as Joker takes advantage of the chaos to make his way to the artifact. Batman and Superman appear on the scene, and easily handle Luthor, but Joker gets his hands on the artifact – and quickly uses it in a series of bizarre ways that break the laws of physics and leave him more powerful than ever and Batman and Superman helpless to stop it. This is the start of a new arc, unlike the previous Luthor/Joker spotlight issue, and the stakes are much higher. But what makes this arc work is the dialogue between the two villains, which is some of the funniest material we’ve seen in this series. Waid perfectly captures Luthor’s intelligent, resentful frustration and Joker’s unhinged chaos, but that mismatched personality conflict doesn’t make them any less dangerous together.
