Ray: The Mouse Man arc at first seemed like a joke, but it’s turned out to be one of the most unsettling arcs of the series – as well as incredibly key to the larger mythology that King is building. Diana has been in search of not just a civilian girl, but of the missing Amazon and the child she gave birth to. But a flashback shows that yes, the Amazon did seek refuge here on the twisted island to give birth – but when she tried to escape, she was shot, and the baby was taken. And now, Mouse-Man has taken Lizzie as well. This seems to be a pattern of King’s on this run. He puts Diana through absolute hell, in a way few writers would dare to. It’s almost unbearable to watch at points. But then, eventually, she’ll get the upper hand – and when she does, she unleashes a ferocious level of Hell on her enemies that’s deeply satisfying. And you can count down to that moment in this issue.

Mouse Man started out as a sort of parody of misogynistic goons, with his invasion of Congress on the back of giant mice. He’s still that – but he’s not funny anymore. He’s a cruel, hardened cult leader who thrives on the pain and subjugation he deals out to women. And that makes the build-up to the thrashing he gets this issue incredibly enjoyable. He has no idea who he’s actually messing with, and he pays the price. At the same time, the girl who Wonder Woman has been helping has been changed as well, and there’s a fantastic scene where she’s going through interrogation to try to force her back into Mouse Man’s hive-mind – but she can hear Wonder Woman doing her thing in the background, and that’s much louder than any functionary’s words could be. This run isn’t like any other WW run I can remember, it’s much more experimental – and it’s going to be very hard to follow up.
