Ray – 9/10

Ray: The Power Company was a very intriguing DC concept from around 20 years ago, with a crew of mostly original heroes running a super-team under the corporate oversight of metahuman businessman Josiah Power. It’s being reinvented now as an all-Black team of heroes consisting of Power along with Black Lightning, Vixen, Signal, and the Jace Fox Batman, and while the original preview issue was an anthology, this one-shot hands the baton over to Bryan Hill. This is a good choice, as Hill is excellent at writing grittier titles. And this one starts bloody – a young metahuman is murdered along with his family in Atlanta by anti-meta hate groups, and he happened to be a friend of Duke Thomas. This brings the heroes into the fray – although Batman is very skeptical about working with others or about signing on for a corporate superhero project. In many ways, this character seems to be evoking the “I work alone” vibes of earlier Batman”.

But with a young man dead, Batman’s desire for justice is stronger than his skepticism. He spends most of the issue arguing with his teammates, but he winds up taking the lead as he tracks down the mastermind of the attack. There are some great action segments in this issue, starting with a fight with the creepy villain Gepetto and later a rescue of a woman being targeted for investigating the hate group. The villain, a new take on Agent Liberty, only appears near the end and doesn’t get too much page time besides catching a serious beating, but he’s really more an example of a much bigger problem. This issue is more about setting up this team than about the case, and on that front, it does a good job. The whole crew has a good dynamic, and Josiah Power is an interesting new power broker to throw back into the fray of the DCU. Hopefully this one-shot is just a start for this team.
