The Question: All Along the Watchtower – Alex Segura, Writer; Cian Tormey, Artist; Romulo Fajardo Jr, Colorist

Ray – 9/10

Ray: Renee Montoya is one of those characters who has been through a lot at DC, working as both a gritty, street-level police officer and a masked vigilante – and she was even Police Commissioner for a while! That feels like it’s all prepared her for this mission, handling security for the entire Justice League. But it hasn’t gone well, to put it lightly. Not only has Cyborg Superman taken over the Watchtower, but he’s used nanites to poison the minds of many of the heroes and turn them against Renee – including Batwoman, her ex-lover. It feels like he’s already won, as the Watchtower is on the brink of self-destruction and Renee is nearly thrown to her death. But in case there’s any life left in her, Henshaw sends his ace in the hole to track her down – the original Question and Renee’s mentor, Vic Sage. This character has largely had minimal screentime in this series, but his big appearance here works very well.

As Henshaw plans one final assault on Earth, Renee finds a unique way to shake Vic free of his mind control, and it’s all hands on deck from here. I did like that The Eradicator, the Kryptonian super-intelligence who has been forced into being Henshaw’s second-in-command, gets to play a key role in stopping him in the end. This issue actually seems a little rushed towards the end, as Henshaw is defeated and there are only a few pages left to wrap things up, but this is just Renee’s solo adventure. She’s staying in her role as the Justice League’s security liaison, and I’m hoping the main title uses her a lot from here on out. But where this issue was at its strongest was in scenes that confront Renee’s dark past and her battles with mental health. There’s an amazing segment that shows Renee confronted by the ghosts of the people she’s lost or let down, and that’s where Segura’s noir roots really shine.
