Ray: The Absolute Universe has been building for a year now, first with three a-list books and then adding three smaller-scale but no less excellent titles to the roster. We now have six heroes patrolling a much darker world but maintaining a bulwark against the darkness – but if they’re fighting, so are the villains. We’ve met a collection of rogues that are far more dangerous than their Earth-1 counterparts, and now they’re ready to start working together. This issue opens with our first look at the JSA of this world – with a huge gut punch involving one character. From there, we’re introduced to Oliver Queen, a still-heroic but more ruthless and maybe unstable man who is on the verge of taking on a fellow billionaire whose grotesque crimes will seem very familiar for those who keep an eye on the news. But the focus of this issue is a meeting – of all the worst people in the universe.

All the major villains have been summoned for this meeting, and Hector Hammond is not pleased with the security. He’s joined by Ra’s Al Ghul, Dr. Thawne, Veronica Cale, and a mysterious, very serious man who never laughs. This is our first glimpse at this version of the Joker, and he’s nicely unsettling – almost supernaturally calm, with some creepy edges. As they debate the future of this universe, there’s a huge twist midway through that takes one major player of the table far earlier than people expected – at the hands of a character who might just now be one of the most dangerous players in the universe. The last few pages contain one shocker after another, as we get closer to our first crossover and are introduced to a massive new figure who is nothing like we expected. Given the quality of the line until now, it’s no surprise the first hints of an event are as exceptional as the rest of the series.
