Review – Robin and Batman: Jason Todd #3 – Robin’s Fall

Robin and Batman: Jason Todd cover, via DC Comics.

Robin and Batman: Jason Todd – Jeff Lemire, Writer; Dustin Nguyen, Artist

Ray – 9.5/10

Ray: Jeff Lemire told an amazing origin story for Dick Grayson a few years back, but this is a very different tale – one that we know is destined to end in tragedy. But as we hit the final issue, we may be already there. Consumed with fear that he’s broken inside and that he’ll never truly be accepted by Batman and Alfred, Jason Todd has left the Batcave and joined forces with Wraith – a deadly, gun-toting vigilante. This version of Wraith is less evil than the others, as he’s genuinely working to get a deadly drug off the street. It’s just that he has absolutely no scruples about how to do it, and he’s pressuring Jason more and more to take the gun in his own hands and get his own kill. As Batman searches for the identity of Wraith and finds his first clue, he and Alfred are forced to reckon with the role they may have played in initially pushing Jason away – and hope it’s not too late to save him.

Innocence lost. Via DC Comics.

There are a few interesting details in this issue, like Barbara Gordon already being Oracle at this point. Although she originally was only shot right before Jason was killed, it’s great to see this version of the character. Eventually, Batman tracks down the new crimefighting duo, and Jason is put in an impossible situation that leaves him no choice but to choose who he truly believes he is deep down. This issue ends on a hopeful not, but also a deeply unsettling one, as we get a glimpse of the spectre that has never stopped trailing Jason. The best moments of this issue are when we’re inside Jason’s head, first seeing the most traumatic moment of his young life, and then the monster he sees manifesting as his anger. Lemire is brilliant with characterization, but Nguyen’s dreamlike art style really is the secret sauce that pulls it all together into a brilliant series and a perfect companion piece to the first mini.
