Green Lantern Dark #6 – Tate Brombal, Writer; Werther Dell’edera, Artist; Giovanna Niro, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: As this epic Tangent Universe adventure gets close to its final act, we’re at the big moment – the confrontation with the dark witch Demona. In different ways, she’s touched and tormented each member of the cast, from the confused Beast Boy to the haunted Bat-Knight. But now, she’s sinking her claws into the Green Lantern herself, as she reveals a dark secret about her origin. It’s not clear if it’s true – I lean towards no – but it’s enough to unbalance her, cause her to lose control of her powers, and split her off from her many friends. And when she hits full despair, her powers become much more unpredictable – and dangerous. This issue is where we hit rock bottom, and it’s always darkest before the light – which is exactly what we see at the end, as this comic returns to its Tangent roots. Very intriguing cliffhanger that sets up a spectacular final act filled with mysteries.

Mr. Terrific: Year One #4 – Al Letson, Writer; Valentine De Landro, Artist; Marissa Louise, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: This series does an excellent job of letting Michael Holt’s past inform his presence, as the framing segment of him investigating Darkseid’s Omega energy works really well in context with his origin story. He barely survived last issue’s explosion at Athena Prescott’s lab, and he barely escapes the wrath of the vicious Comorant, but now there’s another problem – the engine is leaking radiation, and there’s only a short time before it reaches Gotham. That’s when Holt gets a visit from Bruce Wayne, who’s looking to protect his city – and his an ulterior motive to keep an eye on Holt. This issue does an excellent job of showing us how Michael’s mind works differently and how it creates solutions, but the threat of Athena Prescott is anything but over, as he link to Darkseid pushes her further and further down the path to insanity.

Harley Quinn #53 – Elliott Kalan, Writer; Mindy Lee, Artist; Triona Farrell, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: Harley has managed to escape with her life and win a round in court, but she’s still caught between a rock and a villainess – as she tries to figure out whether she should go on a date with her new arch-enemy Althea Klang. But before she can decide – and as Althea continues to seek counseling from her motley crew of villainesses-for-hire – Harley is interrupted by the attack of the mysterious Clang, an armored supervillain who wants revenge. But this turns out to be her landlady’s dimwitted grandson Richie, out for revenge over Harley’s rejection and armored with an AI-powered suit that doesn’t really work all that well. After the two of them talk things out and Richie sees that he’s being an idiot, it’s off to settle scores with the tech bad guys – who are every caricature of these types you can imagine. It has some funny moments, although it’s a pretty broad satire with some odd twists at the end.

Peacemaker Presents Vigilante/Eagly Double-Feature #5 – Tim Seeley, Rex Ogle, Writers; Mitch Gerads, Matteo Lolli, Artists; John Kalisz, Colorist
Ray – 7.5/10
Ray: This ultra-violent, over-the-top series wraps up this month with its pair of stories reaching an explosive finish. The Seeley/Gerads Vigilante tale continues to be the stronger of the two, with Peacemaker entering the fray after getting hundreds of messages from his crazy buddy. As he deals out punishment to the bad guys, Vigilante’s myth continues to build in its own mind. This is a pretty strong story for just how funny Vigilante’s inner monologue is and how good the Mitch Gerads art is.
The backup, by Ogle and Lolli, didn’t click with me in its finale nearly as much. The final installment reveals the villain’s identity, leading to one more brutal fight with Eagly delivering some gruesome blows before Peacemaker can finish him off. And then there’s the ending, which adds a sex punchline to a story all about ultraviolence. Overal, this mini did make me want to watch Peacemaker S2, but not much else.
