Justice League Red #1 – Saladin Ahmed, Writer; Clayton Henry, Artist; Arif Prianto, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: This book was announced a few months ago with relatively little fanfare, so I didn’t really know what to expect about it, but the pre-release buzz indicated a more espionage/suspense take on the Justice League featuring some characters who haven’t gotten the spotlight in a while – and at the core of it, Red Tornado, who had his body destroyed in Absolute Power and is currently serving as the Watchtower’s AI mastermind. But he’s got access to so much data that he’s uncovered something horrible – a collection of scenarios that could spell the end of humanity, that the JLA is likely to completely miss due to their focus on action. So he’s decided to recruit a new team of covert ops agents to take on these missions – all without the JLA even knowing. And first on his selection list is Green Lantern Simon Baz, who has been mostly keeping out of the cosmic affairs in the GL line. Well, it found him sooner or later.

Simon is suspicious of this bizarre plot, but he’s soon joined by another misfit superhero – Power Girl, who is just off her own solo adventure. As both of them piece together the plot Red Tornado has been working on for a while, they’re deputized on their first intervention – heading to an alien planet where Red Tornado says a superweapon has been created that will destabilize the entire universe. The action segment here is a lot of fun, as the two heroes rip their way through a giant robot monster, but there’s a great twist ending that indicates that Red Tornado’s algorithm might not be exactly what it was said to be. The ending introduces a major new player I’m excited to see Ahmed get the chance to write, but this first issue was heavily about setting up the concept and was a little slower than I’m used to seeing from DC. It’s an unusual choice for an ongoing spinoff, but the full team being teased here has potential.
