Ray – 9/10
Ray: Dan Slott clearly has a great love for the Silver Age, and this series so far has included some elements that are much more pulpy than your usual DC fare these days. Even with that, I don’t think anyone was prepared for just how silly this comic would get – especially given the horror-themed cover. Superman is still struggling to survive in a world where Kryptonite is everywhere, and that includes some surprising moments of vulnerability – such as when a woman who he rescues turns out to be wearing Kryptonite lipstick, turning the quick kiss on the cheek she gives him into an achilles heel. It just so happens that this is when Jimmy Olsen and his Gorilla City chum Tee-nah encounter a rampaging Man-Bat, and take it to Leslie Thompkins’ clinic for help when it runs into trouble due to Damian’s intervention. Superman responds to a call for distress – and proceeds to get bitten, turning into…Supermanbat!

This is obviously a bizarre concept – but also kind of a terrifying one, as this new version of the Man-Bat serum is communicable, Superman can spread it by biting, and has an animalistic mind now with all of the powers of Superman. It’s all hands on deck, including some surprising guest-appearances by the Birds of Prey. Amid all the chaotic action, there’s a great subplot involving Bruce Wayne as he tries to keep the threat contained using his greatest weapon – massive amounts of money that can buy up lots of Kryptonite. The threat is ultimately neutralized, Superman goes back to normal, and we get a little glimpse of how Slott would write Damian in a Bat-title – he’s still just as intense as ever, but also has a bit more teenage mischief to him. This issue feels more like a funny diversion from the main plot, but it still shows just how well Slott gets the energy and heart of the DCU.
