DC This Week Roundup – Hunter’s Eye

Ray – 9/10

Ray: The Crimson Archer plotline has been building all arc, and with the final issue of the series looming, this issue brings the epic showdown we’ve all been waiting for. Green Arrow has successfully unmasked the Crimson Archer as a dark figure from his past, presumed dead but more dangerous than ever, and he’s reunited with Roy Harper and Lian who are ready to get their payback for what was done to Roy in the first issue of the arc. The villain is an interesting one – believing that he’s doing good by removing the worst of society, while actually forcing innocent people into his overdoses based on preconceptions. It makes the beating he gets and his eventual downfall very satisfying, but the heart of this issue is in the interaction between Ollie and Roy, with the last scene being something fans have been waiting a long time for. The final issue should be something special.

Harley Quinn @56 cover, via DC Comics.

Harley Quinn – Elliott Kalan, Writer; Carlos Olivares, Artist; Marissa Louise, Colorist

Ray – 8/10

Ray: This chaotic arc reaches its conclusion, as Harley’s road trip has taken a bad turn. She and Mayfly are trapped in a human zoo being hunted by Gunbunny’s demented father, a “Great White Hunter” type who is obsessed with hunting metahumans. He’s pretty much a caricature, but it is amazing to see just how much his daughter hates him. Despite Harley’s insistence that none of these people are her friends, she does wind up working with Mayfly, as well as another over-the-top enemy of hers, and Gunbunny comes through in the clutch. But as fun as this part of the story is, darker things are cropping up in Throatcutter Hill. Harley’s landlady and her grandson are being plagued by a mysterious, vaguely demonic new supervillain who promises to “unburden them”, and his manipulations are spreading across the neighborhood. The ending promises that as strange as this arc was, the next arc has even more craziness planned.

JL vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 cover, via DC Comics.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 – Brian Buccellato, Writer; Christian Duce, Artist; Luis Guerrero, Colorist

Ray – 8.5/10

Ray: It’s almost two full miniseries in, but the main event is here – King Ghidora has arrived. The murderous three-headed kaiju is always bad news, and he’s bringing with him the possibility of an unlikely team-up. Can the heroes actually convince Godzilla that they’re now on the same side? This is a fun, action-packed issue with some amazing fight scenes, including a giant-sized Superman wrestling the head monster. However, some of the dialogue-based segments get a bit more repetitive, like two different characters explaining to someone else that Amanda Waller is dead and Colonel Shaw is in charge. This series seems to be more about unlikely alliances than anything else, whether it’s the Rogues recruiting the Flash, Harley asking Batman for romantic help, or even kaijus agreeing to temporarily put aside their hostility. It should be a fun finale next month, and this out-of-continuity series means no one is safe.
