Ray: This unique deep-space themed Elseworld continues to be one of the trippiest reads in all of comics, as a futuristic version of Batman – one of many – travels the galaxy, seeking answers. Last issue took him deep into the lair of a cosmic version of the Riddler, who put him through a series of interactive riddles. Now, after coming under attack by a swarm of pterodactyls, he’s forced to land his ship on a lush, plant-filled world where he instantly comes under attack by a compound in the air, poisoning his mind. The first evidence of this is when the Alfred robot in his earpiece starts telling him that he’s worthless, that everyone would be better off if he was dead, and he knows that his own mind can’t be trusted.

From there, the gas shifts to taking him through his worst memories, most of which date back to the days after his parents died. He returned to school, with most people either obviously pitying him or outright ignoring him, and the one boy who talked to him completely misunderstood how he was feeling. These are some poignant scenes that wind up actually giving him the strength to push through and confront the architect of his pain – the Poisoned Man, a gas-addled recluse who rules the planet and seems to be a twisted future version of Poison Ivy, with shadings of the Scarecrow mixed in. Batman’s journey is only beginning, but this series has done some really clever things with reinventing the character’s rogues gallery for this Elseworlds.
The backup continues to flesh out the world of the Robins as well, as the two of them track down Batman in search of answers. It’s great to see more of Dan Mora’s art – in more than one book this week. The creative team continues to do a great job of exploring one of the most ambitious new worlds we’ve seen in DC in a while.
