Enter the World of ‘Lilo and Stitch’ in ‘The Fix for 626 – A Love Letter Game’

I first learned of an upcoming movie about an alien and a little girl in Hawaii on a display at Disney’s California Adventure showing future movies. My family saw Lilo and Stitch in a theater when it released in 2002 and loved it. Stitch has been one of my daughter’s favorite Disney characters since that time and she even bought me a Stitch Hawaiian shirt to wear for June 26th (6/26). Therefore, when I learned that a new card game based on the movies was coming out, I was excited to play The Fix for 626 with my family.

What Is The Fix for 626?

The Fix for 626 is a competitive card game of deduction, risk, and luck for 2-5 players, ages 8 and up, and takes about 10-15 minutes to play. It’s currently available from your FLGS as well as Amazon with a suggested retail price of $16.99 for a copy of the game. The Fix for 626 was designed by Seiji Kanai and Jorge Zhang and published by Z-Man Games.

Victory flower tokens are awarded for winning rounds and necessary for winning the game. The Stitch token is used during the game and has two sides–Good Stitch and Experiment 626. If you have the Stitch token at the end of the game, it can affect your final score depending on which side is face up

Players can store all of the game components within the colorful Stitch plush bag which makes it easy to take the game with you.

The player aid cards list the names of the character cards, the number of that card in the deck, and its effect. This is useful in helping players strategize and try to deduce what cards the other players may have in their hands.

How to Play The Fix for 626

The Goal

The goal of the game is to earn enough victory tokens to win the game based on the number of players.

Setup

At the start each player takes a reference card and then the deck of character cards are shuffled. If you are playing a 2-3 player game, take out the two copies of the Sparky card since they will not be used for these player counts. The top card of the deck is set aside face down and not used for the current round. Then each player is dealt a single card for their hand.  Give the the Stitch token with the Good Stitch side up to the player who most recently watched Lilo and Stitch and then the player to the left of them goes first to begin the game.

Gameplay

The Fix for 626 is played over several rounds as players try to either knock other players out of the round or end the round with the highest score. Beginning with the first player and then continuing clockwise, players draw a card from the deck into their hand and then decide which of the two cards in their hand to play. When they play a card, they place it face up in their play area and then resolve the effect. Play continues until the deck runs out of cards and no one can draw or there is only one player remaining.

At the end of a round, each player still playing shows their card. The number on their card is their score. If a player has the Stitch token with the Good Stitch side face up, they score an additional 2 points and win a tie while if they have the Experiment 626 side face up, they lose two points and lose a tie. In case of a tie between players who do not have the Stitch token, each tied player receives a victory token. Unless there is a winner for the game, start the next round by shuffling the character cards into a deck, setting one aside, and then dealing a single card to each player.

Game End

The game ends when one player has enough victory tokens to win based on the number of players. For example, in a 2-player game, players need 5 victory tokens to win, while a 5-player game only requires 3 victory tokens to win.

While the player with Jumba would win with the highest card, because the player with Sparky has the token with Good Stitch face up, Sparky’s 3 becomes a 5 because of the additional 2 points. Photo by Michael Knight.

Why You Should Play The Fix for 626

If you have ever played one of the Love Letter games, then The Fix for 626 will seem very familiar. While the gameplay is similar, the effects on the various cards are different. Furthermore, the Stitch token adds an additional element that can effect who wins or loses a round. However, the main difference is the theme. Instead of trying to get a letter to the princess, you are trying to end up with a main character from the movies and shows. The concept of the game fits perfectly with the theme of trying to get Stitch.

I really enjoy playing The Fix for 626While the theme is fun, the gameplay is just as good. Much of the game is holding on to your good card and trying to deduce what the other players may have. Since you pull one card out of the deck each round without anyone knowing what it is, you are never really sure if your opponents have a high card such as Lilo or Nani, or something that can kick you out of the round. This adds an element of chance and uncertainty into any strategy.

The Fix for 626 is a fast-paced game. Most rounds last only a few minutes with an entire game taking only 10-15 minutes. Therefore, if you get knocked out of a round, another one will be starting in just a moment. Plus, you can play several games in a row. Since the rules are fairly simple, you can easily learn the game and then teach it to others. In fact I have taught it to high school students during our tabletop game club meetings within a few minutes. This makes The Fix for 626 a great choice for a pick-up game with new players or a good starter for a game night to play until everyone arrives or as a warm-up. Furthermore, because everything fits into the colorful plush bag, you can easily take this game with you while travelling, on a campout, or even for a picnic. I recommend The Fix for 626 for all game playing fans of Stitch and Disney. Everyone with whom I have played it have really enjoyed it.
