Batman/Static Beyond #1 – Evan Narcisse, Writer; Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Artist; Wil Quintana, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: The Milestone Universe has been in a weird place ever since it returned to DC Comics a few years back, with an all-star team of writers and artists telling stories that are often set too far apart. But I was surprised to discover that this crossover wasn’t set in that new continuity – it’s a full-on sequel to the episode of Static Shock that saw Static meet Terry, and it picks up in that same time period, also eschewing the events of the Batman Beyond comic books. Terry is still a teenager, hanging out with Max at school, while Static has matured into a seasoned superhero and a married father in his late 30s – protecting Dakota when he’s not working with the Justice League, which has added Icon in this story. Earth is on the vege of joining a peaceful alien collective, and Virgil, Terry, and the League are escorting a ship to its destination. But a Khund armada interrupts their mission and scuttles the whole deal.

This is a setback for Icon and the rest of the League – but Terry and Virgil are mostly unbothered. They have lives to go back to, but things aren’t all roses in Dakota or Gotham, either. While Batman Beyond explored this a little, this comic really delves into what technology has done to the culture. This is particularly clear through the eyes of Melvin, a young activist who comes into the orbit of both heroes. He’s frequently staging disruptive protests agains the massive AI network covering the city – and it becomes clear why when we see that his parents have essentially locked themselves into the network, cutting themselves off from him for most of the day so they can hyperfocus on their work. He’s an interesting character, and while he at first seems like he might be an antagonist, things evolve in a different direction. This first issue does a great job of paying tribute to the cartoons and adding a lot of new layers to all the characters.
