Ray: This series has plunged us into a mystery from the start, with the giant Green Lantern landing on the small town of Evergreen and sealing everyone in. But we don’t know all that much about Evergreen – or really, anyone in this series. Even Jo Mullein’s backstory is a mystery – until now. We follow her as a young girl whose parents divorce, and she moves with her strict father to Evergreen. Under his encouragement to go along and live a respectful life, she joins the police force and finds herself working under Sheriff Bill Hand, a corrupt and cruel man who blackmails the entire town. One good cop after another quits, first Mark Shaw and then the beautiful Renee Montoya, who Jo has a brief flirtation with. But after architect John Stewart finds himself under arrest for refusing to go along with the program, she’s had enough and quits – which takes her to Coast City, where her next chapter begins.

That’s where she meets Cameron Chase, a federal agent who sweeps Jo off her feet. But it soon becomes clear she’s married to the job, and the two have a close but passionless relationship that doesn’t get any better when they get married. That leads Jo back into the arms of Renee, in one of the only depictions of infidelity in a queer relationship I can remember seeing in comics. This comic doesn’t demonize anyone, but it makes clear that this is self-destructive behavior that blows up in Jo’s face. In the end, her decisions lead her back to Evergreen, where Hand has recently died and the town is back in a shape where she can start over – and reconnect with all her old friends. But that’s obviously not going to last, as the universe is calling. The ending between Jo and Cameron seems to hold out some hope for them, but this is one of the best character-driving comics I’ve read in a while.
