Review – Batgirl #13: The Battle for Samsara

Batgirl cover, via DC Comics.

Ray – 9/10

Ray: Batgirl and her allies have found a new haven in Samsara, and the hidden village has brought a lot of old pain to light. Cass is still reeling from the death of her mother, and she’s distanced herself from her family – including brother Tenji – as a result. That’s left an opening for Nyssa, the manipulative lost daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul, who has seemingly turned over a new leaf and created this safe haven. But the Unburied are waiting, and a war is seemingly looming with their nearby enclave. This issue does some incredible things with flashbacks, as Cass’ training is interrupted repeatedly by some very vivid memories of her worst moments – particularly the first time she was forced to kill. I’m glad to see it looks like the version of her origin from Batgirl 2000 is back in continuity, as the stark horror of what she was done as a little girl is the most effective version of the origin.

Meditation. Via DC Comics.

The back half of this issue is a tense infiltration segment as the heroes make their way to the village of the enemy. There are some great segments as Tenji tries to reach out to his sister, but is largely rebuffed as she’s lost in her own thoughts. But as they arrive, they watch the villagers, and observe as a strange performance is put on detailing the history of the village – and that reveals the truth about Nyssa and her role in the whole conflict. To say I suspected she couldn’t exactly be trusted is an understatement, but I think this issue does an amazing job of building suspense until the big reveal. This arc might not be quite as compelling as the tight Cass-Shiva dynamic of the first arc, but it’s doing an amazing job of continuing to expand Batgirl’s world and giving her a unique family dynamic and rogue’ gallery that makes her very distinct from the rest of Gotham’s Bats.
