Ray: This has obviously been one of the biggest and most fraught projects DC has done in a long time – a sequel to one of their most iconic and evergreen Batman stories, concluding the trilogy and also paying tribute to one of the greatest artists in comic book history. Jeph Loeb hand-picked ten different artists, each of which subtly altered their style a bit to pay tribute to the work of the great Tim Sale. This final issue has Gotham finally engulfed in a full gang war, as the “freaks” of Gotham led by Two-Face go to war with the remnants of the Falcone family for control of the city’s crime scene. And in the middle of it all, Batman, Robin, and Jim Gordon – who are still trying to unravel the mystery of the new Holiday Killer. This subplot wasn’t nearly as big a part as it was in the last two volumes, which might be by design – this series seems like the end of an era and the passing of a torch.

The final countdown. Via DC Comics.

But in the end, I’m not sure there’s quite enough here to replace that mystery. The reveal here feels almost off-hand, and the bulk of the issue is the ongoing drama between Harvey and Gilda, as Harvey refuses to realize just how far gone his wife is. The two of them have been an interesting subplot through this entire series, with Gilda obviously playing a very key role in Dark Victory. This mini ultimately feels a bit more like an epilogue to a great story than a true sequel installment, but it makes up for that in visual sense. Scalera, who is one of the great indie artists, disappears a bit into his new art style in this issue, doing an impressive tribute to Sale, and the story ends with a poignant reminder of where this all began. Comparing it as a direct parallel to Long Halloween and Dark Victory doesn’t quite work, but this series is an impressive send-off for one of the greats.
