Review – Superman #31: Last Days

Superman cover, via DC Comics.

Superman – Joshua Williamson, Writer; Eddy Barrows, Penciller; Eber Ferreira, Inker; Alejandro Sanchez, Colorist

Ray – 9.5/10

Ray: DC KO is in full swing, and there are going to be several tie-ins each month. Much of the events of the main series were set up in this title, so it makes sense this is one of the first. Superman has just come back from his conclave with the Justice League and the Time Trapper, and the massive evacuation of Earth is beginning. As he breaks the news to Lois and the Kents, he seeks out advice from another source – the hologram of Jor-El in the Fortress, which has provided him with invaluable knowledge but is constrained by what it was programmed to share. Try as he might, Superman can’t get any secrets about Darkseid’s involvement on Krypton, but he does get what he needs – the motivation to believe that he can save all of Earth, even if he has to work with Mercy and what was once SuperCorp to do it. And so the massive ships that will transport all of Earth go into production.

Countdown. Via DC Comics.

There are many great character moments in this issue, but my favorite by far went to Lois, as she breaks from the evacuation plans and visits the Fortress herself, thinking she can break through Jor-El’s programming through her classic reporter’s persistence. But while she doesn’t get answers out of him, she does find a secret within – Lara’s own hologram, who knows things her husband doesn’t and is far more willing to break through the programming and share some of Krypton’s darkest secrets. Doomsday’s role in this whole series is incredibly fascinating, given the tragedy of his origin story, and as the issue concludes, we get another surprising return – although maybe it shouldn’t be surprising, given that the character is essentially a cat with nine lives. This is going to be one of the oddest and most entertaining tie-ins in DC Comics history, and it’s another huge win for Williamson’s run on this title.
