Ray: This inventive sci-fi take on Batman continues to be one of the most intriguing new Elseworlds created in years, and it’s because the creators clearly have a deep love for this kind of wide-reaching, Japanese-inspired epic. This issue has Batman on the trail of the mysterious phenomena that have forced him to keep Bruce Wayne under wraps for now, and it leads him to a mysterious planet where one of his properties is – a large manor mostly maintained by a single gardner. As he seeks info from the locals, he eventually makes his way to the old manor – and discovers it’s been taken over by a computer program patterned after the Riddler. In the vein of the original, he’s kidnapped the gardner, strapped him to some bombs, and set up an elaborate series of puzzles and traps for Batman to solve. And the cool thing is, each of these puzzles is set up to provide a challenge for us as well, with an interactive element.

All of these puzzles are depicted in splash pages, and don’t expect to get them easily – they all involve plenty of layers of logic and require observing the room they take place in quite a bit. But Batman gets through them, and one by one they’re revealed to us as Batman confronts the Riddler – who undergoes a dramatic transformation by the end of the story into one of the creepiest versions of the character we’ve ever seen. More so than the previous issues, this feels like a classic Batman story with a sci-fi flourish. The backup, focusing on the Robins, also has some very interesting lore dropped in. It follows them as they seek out a fellow warrior – Roger Elliott, the man who trained Bruce and many of the others. While he seems like a broken old man at first, that’s not entirely the truth – and it soon becomes clear that he and his son are going to play a much larger role in the story.
