Yo ho yo ho, a Fun.com pirates life for me. It’s that time of year again. Time to prep for Halloween parties and trick-or-treating and this year, I’m heading down to Davy Jones locker to check out the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean ‘Davy Jones’ costume from Fun.com. I’ll be covering the finer details including quality, design, comfort, and value. Let’s get to it.
First Impressions
Davy Jones comes with everything you need to go from living human to dead undersea captain, including:
- Jacket
- Pants
- Vest
- Sash
- Belt
- Mask
- Pair of Gloves
- Hat
It was packaged well and in a way that nothing was deformed or hard to reshape once it was out of the bag. The first thing I noticed was the detail that the designers went into with the latex pieces. They are well-made and easy to fit to the average person. The hat comes flat and you need to bend it to look like the photo on the website, but it’s not that hard; it just takes a little patience.
The part of the costume that impressed me the most was the jacket. It has a lot of weight to it, in a good way. It feels expensive and not like something you’d buy off the rack at your local costume shop. The print on the jacket and pants match up well and give a nice look to the costume.
Design & Accuracy

I think the costume captures the essence of Davy Jones without breaking the bank. The painting details on the latex pieces is well done and looks like it will hold up over time. The color scheme of all the pieces blend well together and nothing looks out of place or like a last minute thought.
I have a couple of things I would change.
The mask has the eyes cut out underneath the character’s eyes. You don’t see that on the website unless you zoom in. It gives kind of a creepy look to the mask. Not a deal killer, but I would have moved the eyes to see out of the character eyes. The other thing I would change is the sizing on the belt. The one that came with this costume doesn’t fit around the pants that it comes with.
Fit & Comfort

This is one of the easier costumes to wear that I’ve checked out. It takes a lot less time than the Jack Sparrow costume I reviewed a couple years ago. I would say if I were to time it, it would be a five minute suit up at the most.
With the exception of the belt, the costume is true to size based on the website’s chart. Comfort-wise, it’s what you would expect of a costume with the weight that it has in the jacket. I wouldn’t want to wear it on a hot Florida night, but if you are indoors, you will be just fine.
The mask can be worn the way it comes, or you can add some foam to the top and sides to give it a better fit and better control. When it comes to breathing, it’s not bad, but I wouldn’t suggest running in it. There is a small slit in the mouth for breathing and since it’s not form fitting, there’s space around your neck that allows for airflow. It would not be hard to use an xacto knife to make it a little bigger if you need to.
If you have big hands, the left hand might be a little tight, but not unworkable. The claw has a lot of extra space in it and would benefit from some foam inserts to make it easier to control.
When it comes to mobility, you can put the entire costume on and drive, with the obvious exception of the latex pieces and the mask. The vision in the mask is not the greatest for going out alone and since you don’t have use of your hands with the gloves on, I would strongly suggest a buddy system here.
Quality & Durability

The quality of the costume doesn’t scream screen accurate but it also doesn’t feel like a cheap outfit you pulled of the rack at your local Walmart. It feels cosplay-ready and worthy of the character it embodies. The latex pieces hold up on their own in terms of durability and I can see them lasting the test of time.
When the night is over and it’s time to clean the costume, you can throw all the soft parts in the washer. The latex pieces would be best wiped down and laid out to dry. Just a quick spritz of water inside and wipe them down with a cloth will work.
Value for Money
The Davy Jones costume will run you between $249.99 to $299.99 depending on your size. I would say this is worth it if you plan on wearing it to a party or somewhere that the detail will be appreciated. This is a costume you pull out more than once or keep in your arsenal when you have a cosplay convention coming up and need a show stopper. There are more elaborate versions of this character out there, but for someone who wants to have fun and just go out in costume, this hits the mark and then some.
In my house, we put costume pieces like the hands and mask on display instead of storing them away. If that sounds like something you’d do, then I say the cost is worth it.
Final Verdict & Recommendation
Davy Jones by Fun.com is a showstopper for any Halloween gathering or local convention. The price is a little high for the average person but if you consider that it’s built to last and built to be worn more than once, it makes it worth the investment. Adding simple things like foam to the mask and hands will add to the comfort level and ease of wearing. I would highly recommend this costume to anyone who is a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean and wants to enjoy playing the role of the villain at their local Halloween party.
