Ray – 9/10
Ray: The “We Are Yesterday” crossover has a pretty great hook – the Legion of Doom of the past comes forward to the future for a sneak-attack. But they had to get there first, before they were able to manipulate Air-Wave into being their mole, and this oversized annual fills us in on the first chapter. Grodd of the future was the first to arrive, and he quickly gathers his counterparts – including a megalomaniacal Lex Luthor and an unhinged Joker – and tells them the hard truth. They’re destined to be losers, but they can change that now. And so, they hatch an elaborate plan to steal time travel technology from the past and travel forward to Grodd’s future – but first they’ll have to get through the League.
One of the most interesting parts of this issue is the addition of Pythoness, a British supervillain who is long-dead in the present according to Grodd – but I can’t find any trace of her in DC Comics up until now. Another lost character like Triumph from the 90s or Sentry from the competition? The villains launch one sneak-attack after another, including hitting Robin with a tachyon beam that seems to erase him from existence – but actually sends him to a very interesting point in time that will play into the rest of the event – and setting Cheetah up to take the fall. This is a really interesting story that adds a lot of context to the rest of the tale, and I am so intrigued by what’s going on with this massively powerful new villainess.
There’s also a great backup by Hampton and Henry, which focuses on John Stewart’s early life, his time as a sickly kid who was protected by his younger sister, and her death. It sort of squares the multiple versions of John, explaining how he became the no-nonsense military man to gain his father’s approval while always having some doubt about the path he had chosen. There’s also a great reinvention of the initial day he got his powers, and I think this fits nicely in with the great stories the character’s gotten in the last few years.
