Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1 – Joshua Williamson, Writer; Yasmin Putri, Cian Tormey, Artists
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: The path to DC KO begins here, as all the plot threads hanging since All In converge on this one one-shot. Booster Gold is finally back in the present, having been rescued by Superman in the last issue, but he’s traumatized and bringing back a whole lot of knowledge shared by only one person – the Time Trapper, aka the highly evolved future version of Doomsday. The immortal beast is still highly distrusted by everyone, including Booster – who nearly died at their first meeting back in 1992. But as Booster tries to warn the heroes of what’s going on, Time Trapper intervenes – believing or knowing that it won’t work. This creates a sequence of events where the two of them – joined by Wally West, who is immune to Time Trapper’s time-alteration due to his speed – wind up taking a grim tour of the multiverse and all the worlds where Darkseid will be making his landfall in the future.

But I was equally fascinated by the other segment in this issue, a flashback to Krypton, as two teenage girls – Lar and Ursa – spend the days before they head off to classes for their respective science and military training by exploring ancient ruins. The curious Lara and the cautious, rule-following Ursa discover some forbidden artifacts, encounter what looks like Doomsdogs – and discover an ancient item that has ties to Darkseid. This segment is so fascinating because not only does it give the women by Jor-El and Zod’s sides their own story and stake in Krypton, but it possibly rewrites everything we know about Doomsday. He’s a monster, but he’s actually one of Superman’s most tragic villains – forcibly evolved into an indestructible killing machine by an ancient Kryptonian mad scientist. Is there still some humanity under there – and why was the scientist so obsessed with creating the ultimate warrior? This was a great set-up for what’s sure to be an over-the-top action-packed event.
