Absolute Green Lantern #7 – Al Ewing, Writer; Jason Howard, Riley Rossmo, Artists; Inaki Azpiazu, Colorist
Ray – 10/10
Ray: So far, this Absolute title has had the most limited scope, despite being a cosmic epic – taking place entirely within the confines of a dome that has trapped the main characters as they’re used as playthings by strange cosmic forces. So it’s no surprise that when it opens its world, this comic goes BIG. Al Ewing is a cosmic writer by his nature, and he’s done some of the most epic space stories in fiction. And if you thought the Lanterns were terrifying before, that’s nothing compared to what’s planned here. This issue shows us glimpses of all the other powers, including the Black Star – a powerful entity aligned with Qard – and its avatar, Mogo, here a a massive planet of cosmic wrath, designed to eliminate any entity that questions or challenges its rule, down to the last representative of their species. And that judgement is delivered by its representative – Kilowog, the most ruthless warrior in the galaxy.

There are a lot of heroes out there who would be absolutely terrifying if they were shifted just a little bit in a different direction. And this version of Kilowog reminds me a lot of the character of Conquest, the villain from the recent season of Invincible. Anyone who saw that season knows this is a disturbing comparison for the kindly bruiser. One of the big things this series does is rethink what each of the colors could represent, and the unique take on the Red Lanterns in this issue is something I didn’t see coming. And at the end of the issue, we’re introduced finally to one of the most iconic characters from this corner of the universe – and their threat level has somehow been upgraded even more. This whole issue feels so distant from what we’ve seen so far, with two artists with a distinctly unique vibe, but it hints at a whole new world that I can’t wait to explore as Ewing’s vision continues to unfold.
