JSA #12 – Jeff Lemire, Writer; Diego Olortegui, Artist; Luis Guerrero, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Jeff Lemire has been building towards this issue all run, with the Injustice Society sabotaging the Society from within. But now, the dark magic they’ve harnessed has unleashed ancient beings known as the Unnamed Ones – massive eldritch entities who are so huge that a fragment of one tentacle can take up much of a splash page. This lets Diego Olortegui do the best work of this run as the first year comes to a close. But the heroes are united for the first time, with the entire team rescued from captivity and characters like Obsidian no longer under the influence of the villains. The result is a slam-bang final issue of this arc that lets just about everyone shine – including some fan favorite characters like Stargirl and Power Girl who left the team before this arc began. But the threat is so big that it’s hard to see how they can win – which is why it’s good the cavalry is coming.

One of the most interesting parts of this series has been the addition of Kid Eternity – a mysterious young girl with powers over life and death. She became especially key to the series after Wildcat was killed in battle, and his spirit joined the rest of the JSA’s “honor guard” – all the heroes who passed on, many of whom died in rhe Zero Hour event at the hands of Extant. Wildcat plays a key role in this issue, providing guidance to Kid Eternity as well as some big secrets that weren’t fully revealed, but it also seems like he’s staying dead for now – a surprisingly big event that I never thought would actually happen given how long the Big Three have been around. There’s one more big twist about the role of Kid Eternity at the end of the issue that took me by surprise, and sets up a major new player in the DCU going forward. Next up, Lemire reinvents the origin story of this iconic team.
