Review – Superman #30: Legion’s Last Gasp

Ray – 9.5/10

Ray: Josh Williamson’s Superman has been one of the biggest-scale books in the entire DCU, and has formed the sort of spine of the main stories following up on All In for this universe. That reaches a culmination this issue, as Superman has traveled to the future and found himself met with a twisted version of the Legion that serves Darkseid. This would be bad enough – except that his traveling companion, Superboy Prime, has betrayed him and signed up with this Legion that expresses his dark-and-edgy leanings. That just leaves Superman and an emaciated, mentally unstable Booster Gold. Superman tries to appeal to Imra’s best instincts, hoping the Saturn Girl he knows is still in there, but a flashback to her origin in this timeline makes clear just how bad her life has been since then – and how everything that formed the Legion in our world has twisted it in this one.

Prime, of course, steals the show in this issue. His dialogue is some of the funniest Williamson’s ever written, with one line in particular that basically had me on the floor. His journey ever since he was brought back from Limbo was an interesting one. He turned into one of the DCU’s vilest villains, came back and was less effective each time, and then was essentially dragged kicking and screaming into a redemption arc. And now he’s backsliding again – or is he? The reveal here didn’t quite surprise me, but it was handled incredibly well, and if this is the last we see of the character, it’s a very satisfying close-out to his character. There are a lot of other great bits in this issue, including a brief cameo by Lex Luthor that reveals he might not be all that removed from the main story, but this issue is completely packed with plot elements and sets up a huge new cliffhanger for next week’s Omega Act special.
