Ray – 9/10

Ray: The penultimate issue of this high-intensity sci-fi thriller brings it back in line with the main JL series, as Inferno comes calling. Captain Atom has learned how to master his new ability to take and transfer superpower energy – but he’s now working with the government to create an army of super-soldiers that answer to General Eiling. The Atoms are skeptical about this as it is, but a far bigger problem is brewing. Inferno is stalking the super-soldier, and they plan to brainwash him and turn his new ability to their benefit. The darker tone of this issue, combined with Mike Perkins’ art, make this a far more eerie take on Inferno than in the main series. The timeline is a little disjointed at points, which is the only real problem with this story, but the writing team has done a great job of setting up just how dangerous this power could be in the wrong hands – and that’s exactly what happened here.

Ray – 7/10

Ray: The first two issues of this series (which has an anthology creative team) were more meta-based, but this issue delves pretty deep into the traditional dense-and-wacky comedy of the TV series – which definitely isn’t to everyone’s tastes. Amid a subplot of the entire crew being obsessed with a sitcom called “Fresh Buds”, a classic sitcom misunderstanding happens – as Robin overhears Starfire talking about Silkie’s birthday, he assumes it’s her birthday and he forgot, so he starts planning an epic surprise party for her – which, for some reason, involves creating a double identity for himself as “Texas Robin”, his cowboy-hat-wearing cousin, who everyone in the whole city immediately loves. The humor in the series often trends towards mean-spirited, particularly at Robin’s expense, which is the main reason I could never get into the cartoon, but this issue definitely has a few funny gags.
