Absolute Wonder Woman #12 – Kelly Thompson, Writer; Hayden Sherman, Artist; Jordie Bellaire, Colorist
Ray – 10/10
Ray: Every time I think one of the Absolute books has to have reached its peak, the creative teams surprise me once again. This arc of Absolute Wonder Woman blew me away with Hayden Sherman’s depiction of the Labyrinth of the (surprisingly friendly) minotaur, and the reveal that its main villain Clea was actually an Atlantean points to the future of the Absolute Universe in some very interesting ways – we know Green Arrow will be the seventh Absolute book, but the eight seems pretty likely as well. And of course, this arc revealed that there are other Amazons out there, like Io – the badass blacksmith who has been hiding refugees in the maze. She helps Diana get some of the other survivors out – but getting herself out won’t be as easy, as the curse still persists from eons ago.

This series has done an amazing job of showing Diana’s irrepressible compassion in a world that’s much harsher than the one we know. More so than Batman or Superman, it feels like she’s still very much the same character under different circumstances – so her decision to let the mad tyrant of the maze go in search of her own lost kingdom makes a lot of sense. Clea might be set up to be the hero of another story now that she’s free – or this might be the deadliest mistake Diana has ever made. The back pages of this issue have some of the biggest shockers of the initial run, with the first being a big moment of triumph that almost made me tear up with just how beautifully it was executed. The other introduces a classic DC hero – in a way I never expected to see them. If you haven’t been spoiled ion either of these masterful reveals, they deserve to be experienced as the creative team intended.
