Green Lantern #27 – Jeremy Adams, Writer; Xermanico, Artist; Romulo Fajardo Jr, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: As a crossover, The Starbreaker Supremacy has actually been paced rather oddly. The last issue saw the Lanterns win the day through the sacrifice of Nathan Broome, the Sorrow Lantern, who fought through the emotion-suppressing effect and did the right thing. The Starbreakers were weakened, although the entities were lost, and it actually seemed like an ending. But it seems the crisis was just beginning. Hal and John have taken some time off on Earth, and there are some great lines about how their partnership has evolved over the years – but then they get word that the Starbreakers are coming. It’s all hands on deck on Oa, as John steps into the leadership role once again. At the same time, the truth about Keli’s gauntlet continues to send shockwaves through the Corps – but it’s not clear if anyone will be alive to deal with it once the enemy arrives.

John Stewart has always been one of DC’s most popular Lanterns, but the company often doesn’t know what to do with him. Adams clearly knows his continuity, and he actually calls back to the very strange previous run where John encountered the beings of the Third World and evolved into Godhood. There are so many huge status quo changes over the course of only twenty pages, including the revival of all the Lantern Corps for the first time since the beginning of the Infinite Frontier era – which involves the return of some fan favorites like Dex-Star and Larfleeze. I’m a huge fan of anything involving villains and heroes teaming up for the greater good. This issue also features two potential huge status quo changes for the Stewart family, both of which aren’t fully explained by the end of the issue. It’s a big, thrilling issue that perfectly captures the glory days of the Geoff Johns run that elevated this franchise to A-list, and this run is the best the title has been since then.
