Ray: One of the most visually inventive stories to come out of DC so far, this far-future sci-fi/magical take on Batman is impressive in how it takes some of the classic tropes from Batman’s world and makes them fit perfectly into this unique world. This issue is a perfect example, as we start with a gripping segment involving a transport vessel full of civilians. They’re about to be boarded by a corrupt band of pirates that usually seeks a bribe of credits – but this time, the new leader has other plans. He’s decided to take the ship, kill the captain, recruit who he can into the gang, and throw the rest of the civilians into an escape pod to float aimlessly. He brutally takes down any resistance, and winds up leaving with two new recruits – a young man who joins to survive, and an older man who goes by the name “Matches”, and has very different reasons for being there.

I’ve always been a fan of Batman’s undercover work, and it’s impressive how well it works here. I was also a fan of Alfred’s role in this – as a hulking Butler-bot in Batman’s lair who is just as snarky as he is in the flesh. The training grounds on the pirate planet put Batman to the test, as he’s forced to judge when to reveal his true identity and when the boss of the pirates reveals the hidden power he’s got under his suit. The action in this series is top-notch, and the creativity of the world that’s being built here is top-notch. There’s also a very intriguing side story at the end of the issue, drawn by Dan Mora, which gives us our first glimpse at the Robins in this world and reveals that not all might be all right with Batman. The ambition here is through the roof, and the world just keeps getting bigger and bigger as we learn a little more about how Batman’s strange new status quo operates and the inspirations it pulls from.
