Absolute Flash #7 – Jeff Lemire, Writer; Travis Moore, Artist; Adriano Lucas, Colorist

Ray: Amid all the other great elements of this title, one thing that always strikes me about Jeff Lemire’s take on Wally West is how good it is at conveying uncertainty amid homelessness. Wally has lost every safety net he has, and no longer trusts anything. Occasionally he’ll find a temporary retreat, like when he stayed briefly with the Dibnys in the last arc, but that was over as soon as it began as the legacy of Fort Fox found him. But most of the time, he’s on the run, desperate to survive, with only Grodd as a friend. And as his speed saps his strength, he’s in dire need of food. As this issue begins, he tries to get some food from a cranky gas station owner, is forced to resort to stealing, and passes out in the middle of a burst of speed. Waking up locked in jail, in the middle of a massive and mysterious storm, he doesn’t have the strength to vibrate out – and Grodd is nowhere to be seen.
This is the issue where a lot of the plots converge, with the Rogues finally tracking down Wally as he has nowhere to go. The unfortunate by-the-book rural police officer doesn’t stand much of a chance, but it’s not going to be easy to get Wally back to base for the rogues – the storm outside is getting more and more intense, and it doesn’t look natural. Weather Wizard, of course, is one of the villains who isn’t in the initial group of Rogues tracking down Wally, and the reveal about where he’s been and what’s happened to him sheds some fascinating light not just on the overall Fort Fox project – but on the involvement of one key character. And back at base, Rudy West is forced to make a deal with a devil named Thawne just to stay alive. The decision Wally makes at the end of the issue takes this series in a whole new direction, and really drives home why this line is so good – anything can happen.
