Ray: The last arc took us deep into the weirdest elements of Bludhaven, as Dick went up against a 5th dimensional invasion, only to discover that the main threat was Bryce Moran, the child gang member who lost his brother and had wound up with the powers of a Kryptonian through Nite-Mite’s abilities. He’s in the wild, and Dick has to figure out the new landscape on the ground in Bludhaven as a result. His sister has been deposed as Mayor, replaced with a corrupt functionary who had ties to Blockbuster, and now Spheric Tech and the corrupt police department have a free hand. As a result, the gangs are escalating as well, with one experimenting with a twisted combo of Venom and Man-Bat serum to turn themselves into monsters. The result is a chaotic battle that puts Nightwing even higher up on the Bludhaven PD’s most wanted list – and they’re not the only ones looking for him.

The threat of Nightwing Prime, a traumatized child with the power of a God, is big enough that the League comes to Bludhaven to consult with Nightwing. It’s an interesting little testament to how well-regarded he is in the community by now that they don’t try to bull-rush their way in and instead show that they trust his judgment pretty implicitly. There are some particularly great scenes with Batman and Nightwing, as well, as Watters continues to double down on the two of them genuinely acting like a family in the same way Taylor did. I really like the ending to this issue, as Nightwing makes the only choice he can, but one that has the chance of backfiring massively in the whole city’s face. And in the background, there’s a great sense of foreboding and horror as the larger threat starts to make its move – and pull more innocent children into its web. It’s genuinely impressive how Watters is able to shift his style around here.
