Ray: DC’s Elseworlds have gone all over the universe and beyond, but they’ve rarely gotten as gleefully, gloriously weird as this one. Set in the far future, in a world heavily influenced by anime and manga staples like Power Rangers, Gatchaman, Voltron, and Ultraman, it’s a gonzo sci-fi adventure that puts truly new twists in classic characters. Set on a space outpost, it starts with an unknown man being chased down and attacked by a vicious, masked warrior – Batman, who is looking for the most powerful man in space, Bruce Wayne. This obviously asks a lot of questions, but it’s only going to get more puzzling – because Bruce Wayne is looking for Batman.

Bruce is the Mayor of the small outpost, and works alongside his best friend and Sheriff Harvey Dent. He seems like a well-adjusted man – but Batman thinks he’s a shadow in disguise. These supernatural monsters have been plaguing the outpost, viciously killing people – and it’s only getting worse. A tense showdown between the two leads to the reveal of who’s under the mask – and sets up a world that’s so big, so thrilling, that it’s easily one of the most exciting DC debuts in a while. It’s brimming with love for its eastern inspirations, and the team behind Volcano Girl Red, from the acclaimed Massiveverse knows scale and chaotic battles like so no one else. It’s maybe a bit dense with the infodumping for the first issue…

Which is why it’s a good thing we get a backup, with the same writers but Dan Mora stepping in to fill us in on the backstory of this unique world! It’s a fascinating look at how three disciplines of this supernatural combat style developed, with some surprising names being dropped that reveal that just about everything in this world is scrambled. But it’s not just an infodump of a story – there are some surprising guest-stars at the end and a shocking cliffhanger. Fantastic first issue.
