Superman #29 – Joshua Williamson, Writer; Dan Mora, Artist; Alejandro Sanchez, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Last issue dropped a wild twist as Time Trapper (aka Doomsday) guided Superman in the first step of his journey to take on Darkseid’s Legion, and led him to another ally who can help them get there – Superboy-Prime. The twisted meta version of a young Superman became one of Superman’s deadliest enemies in Infinite Crisis, killing Superboy and taking on the entire DCU. He would come back multiple times, before ultimately reforming and dying heroically in Death Metal – or so it seemed. In reality, the continuity effect sent him back to the start, giving him another chance to be a hero and live up to Superman’s legacy on his world. He seems to have made the most of it – or so it seems. He’s still smug, self-aware, and sees no reason why anyone should hold his past crimes against him when it was two reboots ago. And he’s also still capable of pulling off his signature “Prime Punch” move, sending them through the multiverse.

The two are uneasy allies, but once they arrive in the far future, they have no choice but to put it all aside. After all, the Legion’s world is completely destroyed, and there are only a select few Legionnaires still standing from the original three teams, led by Cosmic Boy and Dawnstar. The first order of business is to find Booster Gold, who was taken from the present day on his last mission from the League and has been tortured by the Omega Legion ever since. But after one shocking betrayal, it becomes clear that the Omega Legion can be everywhere. The tone shifts dramatically after this, with Superman being shocked by Booster’s condition and Williamson getting to remind us that the time-traveller is actually one of the DCU’s most interesting heroes. But before they can get home, there’s one more betrayal – and a cliffhanger that raises the stakes for this mission tenfold.
