Review – Green Lantern #26: Beyond the Wall

Ray: “The Starbreaker Supremacy” continues to be the biggest-scale Green Lantern event in years, with the villain – an obscure Justice League foe who has been elevated to a massive cosmic threat – successfully achieving his goal of wiping out emotion in the universe. The last chapter saw the heroes survive thanks to the intervention of Aya and Jadestone, the artificial beings who were the only ones to maintain their emotions. Now, with the group gathered, they make a daring journey beyond the Source Wall – where only Kyle Rayner has been before and lived to tell the tale. And waiting for them are the massive cosmic entities that power the seven Lantern Corps, trapped there – and waiting for someone to release them. These beings have all possessed members of the Corps before – most famously, turning Hal Jordan into the villainous Parallax back in the 1990s. But this time he’s prepared.

This run has really shown off Jeremy Adams’ deep love of Green Lantern lore, as the Lights Out event wasn’t really one I was expecting to see revisited any time soon, but there’s a great twist to this story in that the heroes are willing to work with the entities again – but only on their terms. I’m particularly intrigued by the idea that the Fear entity is a new one, as the villainous Parallax met his end in a previous event. The back half of the issue is mostly action, but there is a great, creepy subplot involving Simon Baz checking on Keli – and finding out that she’s apparently been possessed. This is an interesting little touch of horror to the issue, as the event continues to build towards an epic conclusion on the villain’s home turf. Marion’s guest art is solid throughout, but especially excels when depicting the giant spectrum monsters. Highly entertaining event that combines old-school plotting and modern twists.
