Ray – 10/10
Ray: Like Batman, this issue takes a break from the main plot and focuses on the villains – and just like that one, it’s as good as the series has ever been. For the first arc, the Rogues have been ruthlessly pursuing Wally West, using weapons and a level of ruthlessness far beyond what they have in the main universe. Equally surprising – they’re working for the government, for the same division where Wally’s father Rudy West has been working. While Rudy might be a more sympathetic character here than he was in the original comics, as we see when he tries to reconnect with his runaway son, he’s also got his hands deep in some very corrupt pies – particularly, a failed mission in Syria that all the Rogues were involved in, leaving them disgraced and broken in various ways. And as this flashback issue opens, they’re all going to be pulled back in – whether they want to or not.

Each of the Rogues is in a different place now, but none of them are good. Digger Harkness has become a drunk, hitting on random women and getting into bar fights, but is eager to get his hands on some new weapons. Leonard Snart is consumed with keeping his sister Lisa alive after she lost her legs and slipped into drugs, so the prospect of high-powered prosthetics is more than enough to get them both to sign on. Trickster, meanwhile, is reinvented here as a young hacker who just seems to like chaos and has no problem provoking her fellow teammates. They’re an interesting and messy group, one that definitely captures the vibe of the classic family of criminals. But this issue also contains some incredible lore drops, including the first appearance of an incredibly important figure in the Flash family – and a betrayal that, while expected, comes at the exact right time for maximum impact.
