Batman Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #2 – Andy Diggle, Writer; Leandro Fernandez, Artist; Matt Hollingsworth, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: This series has such a great vibe to it, spinning all its characters out of a 19th century aesthetic that changes their origins but leaves them still recognizable. While this issue doesn’t have too much in the way of plot advancement, it does drop some huge lore about Krypton – which might be a little too familiar to those who have seen the recent movie, but adds some great dynamics between Superman and Martian Manhunter. Lex Luthor is the main threat this issue, with his steampunk robot tearing its way through the town, and his showdown with J’onn in the mindscape has some of the best visuals of the issue. The team is taking shape, but the most intriguing part of the issue definitely came right at the end, when Ra’s Al Ghul and John Constantine made their escape from a mysterious crisis – only to reveal Ra’s ties to the fall of Krypton, and the return of a massive figure who will make any other villain in this series so far look like a piker.

Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #5 – Joanne Starer, Writer; Stephen Byrne, Artist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: The penultimate issue of this miniseries finds the residents of New Kooey still dealing with their bodyswaps, which are causing no small amount of chaos in town – but the meat of the story takes place in Hell, as Fire and Ice are trying to undo the curse that started all of this. And both of them are being tortured with their ultimate weak spot – their parents. Ice is given a sadistic choice, to free her long-dead mother from Hell if she sacrifices Bea in her place. A lot of this story ties back to the last time they were in hell – when Bea accidentally failed her task and sent Tora back to death. Tora is ultimately going to make the right decision, of course – but Bea’s test might be trickier, as she’s met with the war criminal who raised her, and who she ultimately was forced to turn in. Amid the comedy and the great art, this issue has some serious emotional weight to it and a deep knowledge of the characters’ roots.
