Ray: This has been one of the twistiest comics to come out of Black Label in a while, taking place across Mitch Shelley’s many lives. While it does stick with the original origin of him being a lab experiment, that’s now just one part of his much longer life through history. Ram V has introduced new elements like his long, nasty history with Vandal Savage – and of course, the cosmic concept that once he died of old age, he conquered death itself and became his master. Now gifted with cosmic awareness, he’s able to finally look back at all his past lives and access those memories, with the help of Samsara, a unique cosmic guide. But last issue, we discovered that not everything was as it seemed. Samsara wasn’t a cosmic entity, but an alternate Mitch Shelley from the far future – and eternity hadn’t done great things for his mental health. And so Resurrection Man’s biggest enemy became…himself.

But this isn’t much of a physical battle – more of a game of brinksmanship and manipulation, with Samsara playing games of psychological torment with Mitch and trying to break him down. Fortunately, this issue also includes some other unexpected players, including Christopher Chance – who plays a key role in the final resolution here. The segments in the space beyond time where Mitch and Samsara initially meet are visually stunning, and this issue packs some real emotional weight as Mitch grapples with the weight of his eternal life. Some of the best scenes are quiet ones at the beginning, as he’s struggling to come with one of the many deaths he’s seen over his long life. With one issue to go, there’s a pair of huge villains still out there and so many questions. What is clear is that when dealing with matters of life and death, there’s no other writer out there better at these themes.
