DC This Week Roundup – Monsters and Mayhem

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong cover, via DC Comics.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 – Brian Buccellato, Writer; Christian Duce, Artist; Luis Guerrero, Colorist

Ray – 9/10

Ray: The latest issue of this high-octane crossover has some really interesting moments – and the best may be the one that doesn’t include any monsters. There’s a fascinating subplot involving Harley Quinn meeting with herself – the Dr. Quinzel of the Monsterverse world – to see if she should seek out the Joker of this world to see if they can work together. Outlook…cloudy, but all the other heroes are dealing with less friendly stories. Superman and Luthor’s quest has taken them deep into Kong territory – but it’s not the King they encounter here. Flash, still recovering from injuries, has a close encounter with Cheetah while Wonder Woman and Supergirl take the fight back to the Suicide Squad’s new leadership and uncover the truth. This issue has fewer monsters than the first two – but the cliffhanger finally gives us the fight we’re waiting for.

Teen Titans Go! cover, via DC Comics.

Teen Titans Go! – J. Torres, Writer; Megan Huang, Artist

Ray – 7.5/10

Ray: It’s another wacky Titans adventure, as Robin and the crew visit Titans East Tower and discover that Speedy – Robin’s arch-rival – has so many more trophies than them. Naturally, this drives Robin over the edge, and he decides that they need to catch up. So Beast Boy and Cyborg are sent into a deathmatch tournament – where they barely escape with their lives. Starfire and Raven head to Paradise Island to join in the annual Kanga Races. Starfire doesn’t do well with the bouncing while Raven politely excuses herself from this narrative. And Robin tries to enter one competition after another, usually humiliating himself in the process. It’s kind of a one-joke story, but the issue does manage to find some new and unique types of physical comedy to throw in along the way. But overall, aside from the first issue, this series has suffered from one main thing – these characters are all kind of one-note.
