DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #5 – Ian Flynn, Writer; Adam Bryce Thomas, Artist; Matt Herms, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: It’s the conclusion of the first event spinning out of this funny and furry crossover, but DC and IDW/Sega have apparently pledged a much longer multi-media partnership. This first mini was nothing groundbreaking, but it did do a good job of spotlighting the elite heroes from both companies – including the fun twist of having them swap worlds for a while. That led to the spectacle of the Justice League trying to figure out the strange cartoon-animal rules of Angel Island – and the Sonic heroes each filling in for a member of the League and doing a surprisingly competent job, including Knuckles intimidating Luthor and Shadow having no problem handling Gotham City. But now the portals have been opened again – just in time for Darkseid to gain the power of Ranga Rock and make a move on both islands. No more time for catching up with their counterparts – it’s go time.

The final battle has a ton of scale, although the mechanics are a little wonky. This is common in the Sonic-verse – it’s got a huge mythology, but it’s definitely written for a younger audience. That’s fine for the kind of story that’s being told, and the visuals in the showdown with Darkseid are excellent. When this issue ends, order seems to be restored – with everyone back on their own world and the status quo and the Chaos Emeralds back to what they should be. It’s all very neat – but the ending sets things up for future adventures, including a new villainous partnership that should cause a lot of trouble. In many ways, I think this was essentially a pilot – showing us how the characters interact, who they fight, and how their powers can mirror each other. From that perspective, I think it worked very well and will likely find a big audience well outside of comics thanks to how huge Sonic is.
