DC This Week Roundup – Peril in Gotham

Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween cover, via DC Comics.

Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween – Jeph Loeb, Writer; Becky Cloonan, Artist; Dave Stewart, Colorist; Richard Starkings, Lettering & Design

Ray – 9/10

Ray: This series took a bit of a break, but it’s back for a final arc with a host of new artists on board. This time it’s Becky Cloonan’s turn at the helm, and she’s well-suited for an issue that leans heavily into a horror aesthetic. Jim Gordon is spending father’s day alone after his wife left and took their son, and Batman has sent Robin on a mission – so the two men are teaming up to track down Two-Face to an abandoned old house. After interrogating the mysterious Crime Doctor, Batman gets the clues he needs – but Two-Face might have a new motivation, after a shocking reveal from Gilda that may or may not be true. Then comes Solomon Grundy, whose presence here is a lot more menacing than it usually is. This issue doesn’t reveal too much new information about the main mystery, but the Falcone family’s saga takes a big turn in the final pages with I believe two issues to go.

Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Orbit cover, via DC Comics.

Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Orbit – Leah Williams, Writer; Haining, Artist; Hi-Fi, Colorist

Ray – 8/10

Ray: This final issue is basically a non-stop action segment, as the fortress that was formed out of Lunaria starts crashing to Earth and the Sirens engage in a last-ditch battle to survive against Despero. Williams has done a good job of explaining just how a team where two don’t even have powers could go up against a psychic alien dictator, but the bigger problem is how to survive once he’s defeated. The satellite is about to turn into a missile, and so Harley calls in one of her favors – summoning Power Girl for a surprise guest appearance and evacuation. This makes sense, given that Williams has just wrapped an extended Power Girl series. The series as a whole was lacking a bit of the humor that the first weekly miniseries last year had, but the last pages brought it home as another, even more ridiculous adventure is teased. Overall, a fun, fast-paced read that’ll probably read better in a single sitting.
