Robin & Batman: Jason Todd #2 – Jeff Lemire, Writer; Dustin Nguyen, Artist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Lemire and Nguyen are one of the best creative teams in comics, consistently delivering both brilliant visuals and excellent characterization. The last issue of this oversized, three-issue origin story for Jason Todd introduced us to a very different Robin – angry, traumatized, and prone to violence that worried Batman enough that he and Alfred were openly discussing whether this arrangement would work out long-term. When Batman found Robin standing over a dead criminal, you could tell he wondered if the boy had crossed the line – but it turns out it was the Wraith, a gun-toting vigilante who believes in a more brutal way of solving crime in Gotham. And while Batman wasn’t looking, he saw a kindred spirit in the younger vigilante – and made him an offer to join him. That’s something Jason is clearly mulling over as he continues to be haunted by his past.

One of the best parts of the issue’s expanded length is that it can have fun with some of the quieter moments – such as when Bruce calls in Nightwing to work with Jason and see if he can bring out some of Jason’s better qualities. Dick was always a burst of light and energy in Bruce’s life, and the same goes for Jason’s. I’m also glad to see that this run seems to have Bruce and Dick on good terms, with Dick likely deciding to leave the role of Robin on his own. There are some amazing double-page spreads of the two of them fighting crime together, but ultimately Jason isn’t ready to embrace Dick’s guidance and join the Titans – instead seeking out more information from Wraith. I’m not buying that this is Jason turning to the dark side – I think he’s trying to get into the villain’s good graces and take him down from within, but this is a dangerous game that may blow up on him in the worst way. Excellent issue.
